The HIM program is available in the traditional in-class format and also online!
The Health Information Management Program is offered in the traditional face-to-face setting on campus as well as completely online. The one exception is the Professional Practice Experience (PPE) course, an unpaid internship, which takes place at a healthcare facility.
Students have the ability to select the format (in-class or online) for each individual course they are taking on a term by term basis when available. Students have the flexibility to take courses in-class, online or a mixture of both each semester.
Important note for students who reside outside of Ohio: Sinclair is authorized to provide educational services to students in specific states. The Sinclair Health Information Management Program is designed to prepare students for this ever-changing and constantly growing field. Within the program, students will cover a wide range of topics including health information management, medical terminology, computer applications, health informatics, coding, healthcare statistics, healthcare reimbursement, continuous quality improvement, resource management, and other pertinent information. A complete state of the art health information management laboratory is located on the Sinclair campus in addition to virtual applications for online students. Students actively work with health information and receive hands-on experience with the newest technological innovations available. The program also provides direct clinical experience at healthcare facilities.
The Health Information Management program is designed to be completed in six (6) semesters) on a full-time basis. Students preferring to complete on a part-time basis may take longer than six sequential semesters. The degree program consists of open-enrollment courses (general education and division specific) and program specific courses with limited enrollment. The open-enrollment courses may be taken prior to entry into the limited-enrollment courses. To qualify for entry to limited-enrollment courses a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and completion of prerequisite courses are required. A grade of C or higher is required in all program courses. The curriculum includes a professional practice experience (PPE).
The HIM Program is an excellent career choice for immediate post high school education, re-entry into the work force, or a mid-life career change alternative.
The HIM associate degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates of the Sinclair program qualify for accreditation in the health information management field by passing the national certification examination requirements of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Upon successful completion of the examination, the graduate is awarded the credential of a registered health information technician (RHIT).
