Occupational therapy is a health care service which uses a variety of skills and techniques—including daily life tasks, activities, exercises, or adaptive equipment—to help people learn the skills they need to live as independently as possible.

At Sinclair, the occupational therapy assistant program focuses on a case-based format, rather than a lecture format. This reinforces your ability to gain practical experience and have the ability to explore all aspects of a problem through research and small group discussion.

In our program, you will have to opportunity to combine biological and behavioral sciences with technical occupational therapy assistant courses. Additionally, you will participate in extensive clinical training—allowing you to have experiences working with people of all ages and problems, including work in pediatrics.

Occupational therapy assistants (OTA), under the supervision of occupational therapists, help people prevent, lessen or overcome physical and mental disabilities so that they are able to function independently. Many OTAs go on to work in various health care facilities, including hospitals, nursing facilities, schools, private clinics and community agencies.

Degree Programs

Associate of Applied Science - Occupational Therapy Assistant

Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)*, Sinclair’s occupational therapy program provides students with the opportunity to become Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA). This program is designed to be completed on a full-time basis. As part of the curriculum, students must also complete extensive clinical training within 12 months of academic coursework completion. This clinical training gives students the opportunity and requirement to have experiences with people of all ages and types of problems.

Upon completion of the occupational therapy assistant program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After passing the examination, individuals will be Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants and be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio.
