Our African-American studies program strives to provide you with personal, professional, leadership and community development skills to prepare you for success.

The program’s curriculum allows you build a strong liberal arts foundation and acquire an associate degree—all while you choose from a variety of courses, including the Jazz Movement, Black History and the History of the Black American, African-American Literature or Psychology, and even Hip Hop Marketing.

This program might be for you if:

  • You are interested Africana studies and learning more about the African-American culture.
  • You enjoy learning about history and the way our world is shaped by different cultures.
  • You plan to transfer to a four-year university or college to further your liberal arts studies.

Since 1992, Sinclair has offered the African-American studies emphasis and it has always facilitated the success of students and the achievement of Sinclair’s mission of community development. This program provides you with a knowledge of a culture and helps diversify your educational growth. After completion, many graduates choose to transfer to another four-year college or university to further develop their academic experience and background.

Short-term Technical Certificate

African American Studies

Designed for students who are planning on using African American Studies to enhance their careers in Social Work, Public Education, Urban Planning, etc. The student who pursues this Short-term Technical Certificate would plan to use this to supplement their professional development or to strengthen a major for which African American Studies is a strong base.

Articulation & Transfer Agreements

Sinclair works directly with many four-year schools in Ohio and beyond to ensure the college credit you earn will transfer easily to those schools. By developing articulation agreements, formal agreements between colleges detailing the recognition of college credit between the schools, you will know you are meeting the requirements needed at the four-year school of your choice. Ohio Transfer Module

The Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degree programs fulfill the requirements for the Ohio Transfer Module at other public colleges and universities. Students in applied associate degree programs may complete some individual transfer module courses within their degree program or continue beyond their program to complete the entire transfer module.

Upon completion of the Ohio Transfer Module, students will be able to enter most Ohio four-year colleges and universities as a junior with your general education requirements completed. Find out more about the Ohio Transfer Module »
