Sinclair to Acquire Innovative New Small UAS

New Addition to Fleet a Natural Choice for First Responder Focused Program

Sinclair Community College has selected UTC Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corporation, to provide its small unmanned aerial system (SUAS) for use in the college's training program for first responders. SUAS will be the prime contractor, providing air vehicles, ground station, payload and data link services. This purchase adds to Sinclair's growing UAS fleet as well as to the regional strategy surrounding Unmanned Aerial Systems.

Under the contract, UTC Aerospace Systems will provide a complete system comprising two air vehicles, a tablet-style ground station, electro/optical payload and data link. The nearly autonomous system uses affordable high-performance gyro-stabilized electro-optical cameras. This allows the SUAS to provide reliable low-cost real-time video capabilities for a multitude of situations. Sinclair will add these vehicles to the college's growing UAS fleet. Furthermore, Sinclair already has obtained a Certificate of Authorization (CoA) to fly UAS in restricted airspace at the Springfield Beckley Airport.

"Our training programs are being developed with the goal of increasing the capability of first responders out in the field, and the UTC Aerospace Systems SUAS is an ideal size, weight and capability for this program," Sinclair Vice President of Workforce Development and Corporate Services Deb Norris said. "This electronic air vehicle fits in the trunk of a police car, can be airborne as soon as a need is identified, and operates in near silence. We look forward to getting this technology ready for operational service with law enforcement, fire fighters and other first responders. We are also very excited about the role being played by SelectTech Geospatial, a rapid reaction Advanced Manufacturing Facility assisting with manufacturing, integration and testing on this product. This is another step forward for Sinclair's UAS program and in support of the broader UAS strategy of the Dayton Region and the entire State of Ohio."

David Krier, Business Development Director, Sensors & Integrated Systems said, "Sensors and sensing systems integration is one of UTC Aerospace Systems' core technologies, and it provides us a path to develop and deliver affordable unmanned air systems that will perform diverse missions. We look forward to working with Sinclair Community College in providing an innovative solution that will support law enforcement, first responders and industries such as agriculture, natural resource management, energy exploration and infrastructure support."
