Celebration of Purpose: NIA Awards and Gospel Fest

Date: Friday, February 28, 2014

Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

This year's event will kick-off with a Meet and Greet reception from 6:00-6:45 p.m, followed by the NIA Award Ceremony and 4th Annual Gospel Fest beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Additional highlights of the ceremony will include musical selections from several local gospel artists, a multicultural choir; and a special guest speaker.

The African-American History committee established in 1990 an annual (Unsung Heroes) Award for African-Americans who were associated with Sinclair Community College. An "unsung hero" is someone who performs good deeds, but has gone unnoticed for his/her exceptional efforts. In 2001, the award was renamed the NIA Award. NIA is a Swahili word, which means "purpose." This coveted recognition is awarded to individuals in five distinct categories: student, faculty, staff, community member, and Diversity Champion who demonstrate leadership and good deeds with the "purpose" of uplifting African-American students on campus or citizens throughout the Miami Valley.
