Hundreds of High School Students Compete for Top Honors at Sinclair's 2022 Tech Prep Showcase Competition

Sinclair Community College welcomed more than 400 high school students from the Dayton region to compete in the 2022 Tech Prep Showcase held on Friday, April 22, 2022, at Sinclair’s downtown Dayton campus.  

441 high school students from Centerville, Dayton Public Schools, Kettering, the Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Miamisburg, Stebbins, and Wayne presented projects based on skills and knowledge they have gained within their career pathway through the partnership with their high school and Sinclair’s Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium (MVTPC).

  • Criminal Justice: Stebbins High School: Using Problem-Oriented Policing to Solve Traffic Control Issues

Over 100 judges from Dayton region businesses served as judges to evaluate each team and speak with participating students about the planning and execution of their projects. The Tech Prep Showcase champions received a team trophy and individual team member trophies. 

Tech Prep Showcase projects are featured in one of Ohio’s 15 career pathways and are judged on project research, work-based learning, academic/technical skills, professional relationships, and presentation skills.  The top 4 pathways represented in the competition included:  Exercise Science & Sports Medicine, Media Arts, Medical Bioscience, and Visual Design & Imaging. This was the first face-to-face Showcase since Spring of 2019. In-person competitions were put on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

“Sinclair College is proud to bring back this exciting event that allows Tech Prep students to engage with Dayton region employers, educators, and fellow students and present projects that highlight the knowledge and skills they have gained in the classroom,” said Laura Hinkebein, Director – MVTPC. “Tech Prep aligns with Sinclair’s mission to find the need and endeavor to meet it by developing students who are college bound and career ready for in-demand jobs in the Dayton region.”

MVTPC is a unique organization whose mission is to help students meaningfully experience a career/technical field of study at the high school level and simultaneously earn college credits. MVTPC fosters partnerships with educators and employers to create seamless career-technical education programs while in high school and continue through a post-secondary credential. Nearly 11,000 career technical students from 20 school districts participate in Sinclair’s Tech Prep program. Sinclair’s Tech Prep program offers multiple pathways for students including agricultural and environmental systems, arts and communication, business and administrative services/finance/marketing, construction technologies, engineering and science technologies, health science, hospitality and tourism, information technology, manufacturing technologies, transportation systems, and more.
