The Sinclair (16-0/5-0 OCCAC) Men's basketball team returned home after knocking off Cincinnati State Wednesday night 80-60 to host the Commodores of Lorain Co. on January 9.
Sinclair moved up to #3 this past week in the latest NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Polls and with the 100-88 win over Lorain County (9-8/0-4 OCCAC), remained unbeaten and at the top of the OCCAC standings at 5-0.
The Commodores was able to match the high powered Sinclair offense most of the first half but with foul trouble and having to go to the bench late, Sinclair found some breathing room. With several key players on the bench for Lorain County, the Pride took advantage and opened up a 47-32 half time margin.
Both teams were content to trade baskets early in the second half until Sinclair made a run to push the lead out to 23 points (62-39). Not normally a good three point shooting team, just 30% on the year, the visitors started to connect and get hot from behind the arc. Lorain poured in 6 out of 12 attempts (50%) to slowly bring the lead back down.
Late in the game, Sinclair was able to hold off an energetic run by the Commodores and keep the unbeaten streak alive at 16.
Leading the way for the Pride was Marcellous Washington (6-1/SO – Lexington KY Bryan Station H.S.) with 25 points on 5 for 8 shooting from the 3pt line and 7 assist. The 5 made 3's moved him into 10th all-time for Sinclair with 96, just behind Kevin Vest (2008-10) with 97. Marcellous also with 5 steals moves him into 7th on the Sinclair all-time steals list.
Reshardd Harris (6-4/SO – Detroit Michigan Collegiate H.S) scored 22 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and Akiean Frederick (6-8/FR – Columbus Franklin Heights H.S) notched another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Manny Powell (5-8/SO – Gahanna Lincoln H.S.) chipped in with 17 points and 6 assist. With the 17 points tonight, Manny has now scored over 700 points in his career and is closing in on 300 assist.
Steven Perriere (6-7/SO – Paris, France) contributed his own double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Steven now has 401 total rebounds for his career ranking him 7th all-time at Sinclair. He also moved up on the all-time Sinclair offensive career rebounding list with 6 tonight giving him a total of 142 6th all-time just behind William Calhoun (1984-86) who has 146.
Wednesday night Sinclair will host Clark State at 7:30pm. This will not count as a conference game but will count in the District rankings. Following Wednesday night's game, Sinclair will finish the three game home stand against Cuyahoga on Saturday at 3pm. All home games are played on the Downtown Dayton Campus in the only arena in the nation named: Building 8.
