Which computer class should I take?

BIS 1100 Intro to Computers & Keyboarding
You need BIS 1100 if you:
  • have limited or have never used a mouse
  • have limited understanding of icons, buttons and menus
  • need more practice in copying and moving files; changing desktop features 
  • want to learn how to create directories

BIS 1120 Computer Concepts & Applications

You need BIS 1120 if you:

  • want to learn more about the history, equipment, programming concepts
  • want to learn about information media and literature of computer information systems
  • want to learn about personal computers, software, peripheral devices, etc.

BIS 1100 Intro to Computers & Keyboarding

You need BIS 1100 if you:

  • watch your fingers as you keyboard
  • developed incorrect keyboarding techniques (bad habits)
  • received a C grade or lower previously in a keyboarding class
  • have less than one full year of high school (or other) keyboarding
  • type less than 20 words per minute
BIS 1200 Keyboarding/Document Formatting I *

You need BIS 1200 if you have:

  • earned a “C” grade or lower previously in BIS 1100
  • You must be able to:
  • keyboard by touch (without looking at fingers and/or keys)
  • type 35 words per minute with 5 or less errors
  • understand Microsoft Word and have completed BIS 1100
BIS 1120 Computer Concepts & Applications

You need BIS 1120 if you:

  • wish to learn the basic applications of Microsoft Word for Windows   emphasizing
  • commonly used commands for editing, formatting, and revising text
  • wish to learn basic spreadsheet applications (formatting procedures in generating reports)
  • wish to learn basic features, commands, of creating business presentations for delivery via overhead transparencies, electronic slide shows and paper-based printouts

NOTE:  You must have basic keyboarding skills and have experience with computers and Microsoft Windows. If students are not familiar with basic computer concepts, keyboarding and Windows file management, they may want to consider successfully completing BIS 1100 before attempting this course.

 

*If after completing BIS 1100 with 20 to 30 words per minute then BIS 1200 is recommended.
