Health Information Management (HIM)

The HIM program is available in the traditional in-class format and also online!

As of September 2008, the Health Information Management Program is offered in the traditional face-to-face setting on campus as well as completely online.  The one exception is the Professional Practice Experience (PPE) course, an unpaid internship, which takes place at a healthcare facility. (More information on the PPE course is available within our Student Information Packet under Admissions Information on the left.)

Students have the ability to select the format (in-class or online) for each individual course they are taking on a term by term basis.  Students have the flexibility to take courses in-class, online or a mixture of both each semester.

Important note for students who reside outside of Ohio:  Sinclair is authorized to provide educational services to students in specific states.  Please refer to our Out-of-State student information webpage for the most up to date information at:  http://www.sinclair.edu/online/stateauthorization/index.cfm

 Program Information:

The Sinclair Health Information Management Program is designed to prepare students for this ever-changing and constantly growing field. Within the program, students will cover a wide range of topics including health information management, medical terminology, computer applications, health informatics, coding, healthcare statistics, healthcare reimbursement, continuous quality improvement, resource management, and other pertinent information. A complete state of the art health information management laboratory is located on the Sinclair campus in addition to virtual applications for online students. Students actively work with health information and receive hands-on experience with the newest technological innovations available. The program also provides direct clinical experience at healthcare facilities.

The program may be completed in two years (five semesters) on a full-time basis by those students who meet all program prerequisite requirements. Students who are required to enroll in courses to meet prerequisite course work will need to attend additional terms in order to complete the program. Many students elect to attend the program part-time, extending the length of study to three or four years. This path is especially beneficial for students who must work part-time and maintain family responsibilities while attending college.

The HIM Program is an excellent career choice for immediate post high school education, re-entry into the work force, or a mid-life career change alternative.

Accreditation:

The HIM associate degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).  Graduates of the Sinclair program qualify for accreditation in the health information management field by passing the national certification examination requirements of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Upon successful completion of the examination, the graduate is awarded the credential of a registered health information technician (RHIT).
