National Honors for Top Professor in Ohio

DAYTON, Ohio (11/19/09) - The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have named Dr. John Parcell at Sinclair Community College the 2009 Ohio Professor of the Year. Parcell was selected from more than 300 top professors in the United States.

"Dr. Parcell is a gifted and award-winning musician and composer, but in the eyes of his students and colleagues, he is first and foremost an exemplary teacher. John’s students achieve levels of excellence in and out of the classroom that they do not know are possible for them," said Dr. Kathleen Cleary, dean of the liberal arts, communications and social sciences division at Sinclair. "He creates a welcoming, yet challenging environment that is marked by a spirit of innovation, risk-taking and a palpable desire for excellence. "

Parcell has received awards for his extra curricula activities; include a Certificate of Merit from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, and the "Best of Season" award from the DayTony organization and the NISOD teaching award.

CASE and the Carnegie Foundation have been partners in offering the U.S. Professors of the Year awards program since 1981. TIAA-CREF, one of America's leading financial services organizations and higher education's premier retirement system, became the principal sponsor for the awards ceremony in 2000. Additional support for the program is received from a number of higher education associations, including Phi Beta Kappa which sponsors an evening congressional reception.

This year, there are 38 state winners. CASE assembled two preliminary panels of judges to select finalists. The Carnegie Found ation then convened the third and final panel, which selected four national winners. CASE and Carnegie select state winners from top entries resulting from the judging process.

Parcell will receive his award alongside two of his students from Sinclair at a ceremony in Washington DC on Thursday, November 19.
