Film Festival to Highlight Social Issues

DAYTON, Ohio (04/22/10) – Three films highlighting contemporary social issues are part of the inaugural ‘Sinclair Screenings’ this spring.

‘Sinclair Screenings,’ Sinclair’s first annual film festival, kicks off Monday, April 26 with the film "Coal Country." It continues on Wednesday, April 28, with a screening of "Defiance" ; and wraps up on Tuesday, May 11, with a screening of the Oscar-nominated film, "The Last Truck." The events are free and open to the public.

"These films deal with significant social and cultural issues," said Dr. Steven Lee Johnson, president of Sinclair. "The screenings and the ability to interact with our faculty and the films’ producers or directors will provide unique learning opportunities for our students and staff."

The screenings are as follows:
"Coal Country" will be screened on Monday, April 26, at 3 p.m. in Building 14, room 130. "Coal Country" is the compelling story of modern coal mining and the disputes between miners and residents affected by the industry. A reception featuring bluegrass music will start the event a t 2:30, and the film will be followed by a question and answer session with its producer at 4 p.m. 

The film "Defiance" will be shown Wednesday, April 28 as part of Sinclair’s annual Holocaust Remembrance week. The film begins at 6:00 p.m. in room 130 of Building 14 on Sinclair’s main campus. The film highlights the escape of three Jewish brothers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. A brief dialogue will follow the screening. 

Sinclair Screenings concludes May 11 with "The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant," an Oscar-nominated HBO documentary made in the Miami Valley. The screening begins at Noon in the Fred Smith Auditorium in the Sinclair Conference Center. The movie will be followed by a question and answer session with directors Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, as well as former GM employee and current Sinclair student Kate Geiger.
