The Community College National Center for Community Engagement recognized Sinclair Community College as the 2011 recipient of the Service Learning Collaboration and Civic Engagement Award in the International Service Learning category.
Sinclair collaborated with Transformational Journeys to develop an international service learning program in which their faculty and students travelled to Guatemala to build needed facilities and cinder-block stoves for the local residents.
During these trips, students, faculty, and local family members worked under the supervision of local masons to build a community school and cinder-block ovens for many households. Students also gave educational presentations on public and personal health issues.
These experiences provided students with Humanities and International Studies course credit, an understanding of the local culture, and experience making public presentations. In the evenings, local speakers taught the students about issues that helped them better understand the culture.
