Student Achievement in Reading (STAR)
| Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) is a national professional development initiative to improve reading education for intermediate level adult readers. |
| |
| As STAR programs, teachers and administrators are trained and supported in: |
| |
- Conducting diagnostic reading assessments to identify students' instructional needs in all four reading components (Alphabetics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension)
|
- Using the results of diagnostic assessments to plan instruction.
|
- Developing and delivery lessons using explicit instruction.
|
- Using evidence-based reading strategies.
|
- Monitoring student progress.
|
| |
| Six states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Ohio and South Dakota) participated in the national pilot from 2004-2007. Ohio had nine pilot sites. In FY08, Ohio added six new STAR programs; in FY10, five more joined; and in FY11, four new programs came on board. These sites attended three Institutes and received technical support from the SWRC. |
