College Hosts Appalachian Hero Awards

DAYTON, OHIO (04/18/2011) – Sinclair Community College will host the 15th annual Appalachian Unsung Hero Awards breakfast on May 6, 2011.

This event is hosted by Appalachian Outreach and Studies at Sinclair. A letter and nomination applications were mailed in January. The selected winners are invited to attend the breakfast with their families.

An "unsung hero" is someone who "performs good deeds, builds pride and self-esteem, but has gone unnoticed or unrewarded for his or her exceptional efforts," Rana Peake, Appalachian outreach coordinator, said.

Peake took over for the former long-time coordinator, Carol Baugh, after her retirement in December 2010. This award and event is an opportunity to recognize the people who have contributed to the urban Appalachian community in Dayton, Peake said. Some of the awards categories include family, arts and humanities, youth leadership, and outstanding Sinclair student/alumni.

"It’s a pleasure to honor those who don’t ask to be recognized for their efforts, but only ask to serve.  There are countless others serving our Appalachian communities who go unrecognized, and we thank them as well," Peake said.

The awards breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Charity Earley Auditorium in the David H. Ponitz Center, Building 12, at Sinclair.
