Sinclair Community College wins national Bellwether Award for innovation

DAYTON, OH (03/04/11) – Sinclair Community College won its first Bellwether Award in theInstructional Programs and Services category for the Pioneering Online Sciences Labs project. 

The Pioneering Online Science Labs presentation described the student pathway to online degree completion at Sinclair Community College. The pathway begins with students expressing interest in completing an online degree and ends with the successful completion of a fully online degree. 

The prestigious Bellwether Awards recognize outstanding, trend-setting programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future. Applications for the awards are competitively peer-reviewed by a panel of judges, who select 10 finalists to present at the Community College Futures Assembly where they are judged based on how well the program addresses the following criteria: 

1. Need for Project
2. Magnitude of effect
3. Strategy and capacity to bring to scale
4. Workforce 2020
5. Sustainability 

The finalists from each category were invited to go to Orlando and present on their programs. The Sinclair team headed t o Orlando to present on Jan. 31, 2011 and the winners were announced on Feb. 1, 2011. The Policy Summit, Workforce 2020, focused on the extent community colleges are prepared to address the needs of the future workforce, identify potential gaps, and develop recommendations for policy-makers. Finalist applications addressed the 2011 conference theme.
