Dayton, Ohio (02/03/10) – Sinclair Community College will hold the 2010 NIA Awards Ceremony on Friday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Sinclair Conference Center, Building 12.

The NIA Awards Ceremony is an annually held program to showcase, celebrate and nurture achievements in creative arts, academics, and mentorship and leadership by Sinclair students, faculty, staff and alumni.The program has traditionally been createdand organized by cross-division teams.

The awards portion of the program features the celebration of the achievements of those nominated by their peers based on how well they illustrated the principle of NIA (which is a Swahili word meaning "purpose").They are assessed on their effectiveness instriving to build, uplift, and empower the community.

This year’s keynote speaker is Attorney Mia Spells.Attorney Spells previously worked as an Assistant Prosecutor for the City of Dayton before opening her own law office in 1993. She handles civil, criminal and civil rights cases.


Attorney Spells is the past president of the Thurgood Marshall Law Society,Inc., Dayton, Ohio, former president and secretary of Mercy Manor , a prison ministry,the NAACP, SCLC, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and numerous other organizations.
