April 23rd, 2003

Officers attending: Pam Chambers, President; Cindy Beckett, Vice President; Fred Thomas, Secretary

Senators attending: Jim Brooks, Susan Callender, Frank Clay, Roxann DeLaet, Kenneth Melendez, Jackie Myers, Nick Reeder, Shari Rethman, Ellen Rosengarten, Vann Rogers, Marsha Wamsley

Senators not attending: Rick Jurus

After the conclusion of the retreat with the Provost and Vice Presidents, Pam called the brief Senate meeting to order at 4:15 in the IAMS Conference Room at Carillon Park

1.      Announcements

Pam provided updates on the Spring elections for Senators and Senate officers, and on the Presidential Search. She also reported that Chancellor Chu has suggested that it may be appropriate for two-year college faculty and students to become more active in working to educate legislators.

2.      Archiving of Web Materials

Pam and Nick led a discussion about the archiving of web materials. An email from Julie Orenstein indicated that it is necessary to keep a printed record of all old web materials, and some faculty feel this is an unreasonable requirement. Cindy said that each department is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of materials on its web pages and for archiving those materials.

3.      Competency Training

Pam shared a concern expressed by some faculty that the new system for staff evaluation may be expanded in the future to faculty evaluations.

4.      Handbook Changes

Cindy distributed a packet of proposed Handbook changes (attachment FSMA20030423-04A) from the Academic Policies Committee. The proposed changes are intended to improve the process of applying for collegewide merit, promotion and tenure by making the forms and the instructions more consistent and clearer. She asked that Senators and faculty compare the old and new materials in total, since many items have been substantially reorganized. The content and the criteria, however, are not being changed.

5.      FITs

Pam reported that the FITs team has received the national AAUP benchmark data and the data for Ohio community colleges. She said the team would meet again on May 1st and led a discussion of the key issues under consideration.

The meeting adjourned at 4:45.
