Faculty Senate Minutes

                                     October 24, 2007

Nick called the meeting to order at 2:30 in Rm 7342

 

  1. Approval of Minutes

 

Minutes for the Faculty senate meeting of October 17, 2007 were approved as revised.

 

  1. President’s Report                    

 

Nick reviewed the information from the Senate Officers October 3, 2007 meeting with Dr. Grove.  Dr. Grove agreed that the Senate can approve the four faculty members for the Faculty Handbook Review team.  Nick will draft the note to the faculty, soliciting those who might be interested to contact him, and to include how their skills might benefit the revising process.   * A Motion was made to retain an attorney with expertise in employment law to assist the Faculty Handbook Revision committee identify areas of concern. 

The Motion was amended to add… as well as to review the revised handbook at the end of the revision process.  **The Motion passed.

 

 The Senate will appoint four faculty members to the Sabbatical Committee, when the current members’ terms expire.

                                                                                                                                        

Nick encouraged Senators to remind their constituents to fill out the Faculty Learning Day survey. Results of the survey will be made available to the Senate.

 

Nick asked the senators for input concerning the Matrix of Faculty Issues. Some changes to be discussed with Dr. Grove at the October 31, 2007 Senate Officers meeting with her: Under the Faculty compensation Model, change Initiator to Administration; remove the Merit Process , and add Retrenchment.  Under Comprehensive Evaluation of Faculty, change the initiator to Administration; Change Faculty Handbook Policy Review to reflect a comprehensive revision process.

 

 

  1. New Business

 

The Distance Learning Ad Hoc Committee will post a discussion forum on the Senate website.

 

Discussion on the SME Division  requiring all full time tenure tracked faculty to quarterly use the Purdue Student Evaluation survey.  Nick suggested that the Senators review section 2.6.1 in the Faculty Handbook to determine whether this SME policy contradicts the language in the Handbook.

 

The meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
