Faculty Senate Minutes

Nick called the meeting to order at 2:30 in rm. 7342

 

  1. Approval of Minutes
    Faculty Senate minutes for February 27, 2008 were     approved with revision.

  2. Dr. Helen Grove and Nancy Thibeault were invited to senate to discuss the Distance Learning external review report. The senate’s Distance Learning ad hoc committee: Jim Shimko, Eric Kraus, and Moez Ben-azzouz shared some of the major concerns faculty expressed on the Distance Learning discussion forum, as well as other feedback from faculty.   The major areas shared by the ad hoc committee and other senators were: some disciplines are requesting an option to be able to choose proctored testing; many faculty feel they have been completely disconnected from the decision making process as it relates to Distance Learning issues. Another concern brought forth was that as an institution, the college does not seem to have a strategic plan to ensure the integrity of online courses.  It was also noted that student convenience should not be a major variable if it jeopardizes the quality of the course.  The biology online lab for the Health Information Technology was discussed.  Dr. Grove noted that the goal is not to have every course online; however experimentation and an open mind to possibilities are very important.

 

3.   The President’s Report

 

Nick distributed the 2008 Student Judicial Affairs Code of Conduct Handbook, and asked the senators to review it before Dean Cole speaks with senate concerning the process of faculty dealing with student conduct problems in the classroom.  Nick also noted that the OAC (Ohio Administrative Code) has a standard regarding full-time to part-time ratio; the address is: http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/333-1-04.

Mike Brigner, a member of the Faculty Handbook Revision Committee will confer with Attorney Julie Ford concerning the contractual status of the Faculty Handbook.

 

Amanda Romero will attend the Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for March 25, 2008 at 3:30 in 12-131.

Nick noted that it is time to convene the Assembly’s Elections Committee and start planning for spring elections.

*Motion- To invite an AAUP representative from Washington D.C. to speak to the Faculty Senate spring quarter.  Motion Passed

The faculty informational meeting on the advantages and disadvantages of collective bargaining will be tentatively scheduled for fall quarter.
