Interior Designers need to be creative, imaginative and artistic. They also need to be disciplined, organized and skilled business people. Combining aesthetic vision with practical skills and knowledge, interior designers work with clients to develop design solutions that are "aesthetically appealing, technically sophisticated and pragmatically satisfying."

 

This program might be for you if:

  • You consider yourself artistic and enjoy creating in a variety of mediums.
  • You would like to work in fast-paced, creative environments.
  • You can visualize 3D spaces and interior layouts, being detail oriented and precise.
  • Enjoy planning and making aesthetic changes to interior layouts and decor.

Interior Design graduates typically pursue careers in corporations, with home goods manufacturers/sellers, remodeling businesses, construction companies and other private businesses and may also develop their careers in a specialized design area such as healthcare, hospitality, commercial, corporate/work spaces, kitchen and bath, and sustainable interior design.

What is the program about?

The program prepares students for careers in the creative, detail-oriented field of interior design. Students will develop the knowledge and technical skills necessary to design an interior. Developing floor plans and selecting and coordinating colors, floor and wall coverings are common tasks performed by interior designers. They also place furniture, fixture and cabinetry, and prepare drawings, cost estimates and contracts. Sustainability, building codes, the ADA and basic business practices are included, as well as the development of individual design portfolios. This degree program contains one or more embedded certificates which will be automatically awarded when the certificate requirements are completed.   • Recognize, understand and use the language and jargon of interior design.
  • Apply critical thinking and creative problem- solving skills to a variety of interior design problems.
  • Develop professional quality presentations and demonstrate adequate written and oral communication skills.
  • Discuss the history, fundamentals and basic theories of interior design.

Career Opportunities

Interior design graduates typically pursue careers as designers or consultants in design studios, architecture firms or commercial retailers. Some graduates choose to continue their education in design or a related field at a four-year institution.

Transferability

Formal articulation agreements with other colleges and universities indicate how Sinclair programs and courses will transfer to other institutions.
