The Sinclair Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program

The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program of the National Science Foundation assists universities and colleges in their efforts to increase underrepresented minority student recruitment, retention, persistence, and attainment of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees. It does this by the formation of alliances and carrying out specific programming to encourage student success in STEM. The Ohio LSAMP Alliance consists of 6 four-year institutions and 4 community colleges: Central State University, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State and Technical Institute, Cleveland State University, Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Miami University, The Ohio State University, Sinclair Community College and Wright State University.

In order to be eligible to participate in The Ohio LSAMP Alliance, students must:

  • Be an underrepresented minority as described by NSF LSAMP Program Description (African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Native Pacific Islander)
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or its possessions
  • Be enrolled at a participating institution in a qualifying STEM degree program

The LSAMP program is dedicated to helping minority STEM students on their quest for an Associates’, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree.

Sinclair Program Elements

The program will provide financial stipends for activities and tasks that that are associated with making students successful. These are some of the activities that qualify for a stipend:

  • Monthly Community Networking Meetings
  • Faculty Mentoring 
  • Success Coaching, Academic Advising, and Tutoring 
  • Paid Undergraduate Research Internships 
  • STEM Summer Bridge Institute 
  • Regional, State, and National STEM-Related Conferences

Dr. Cari Gigliotti - LSAMP Research Internship Coordinator (RIC)
Dr. Cari Gigliotti

Dr. Cari Gigliotti is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Sinclair Community College. In addition to her role as faculty, she serves as the Research Internship Coordinator (RIC) for the Sinclair LSAMP program. The LSAMP RIC provides support and assistance to Sinclair LSAMP scholars interested in undergraduate research.

The RIC establishes relationships with researchers at local four-year institutions to secure research internship opportunities for Sinclair LSAMP scholars demonstrating academic readiness. The RIC manages research intern duties, verifies weekly lab performance, conducts site visits, and handles inquiries regarding undergraduate STEM research.
