Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA.S.AAS)

Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA), under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist (PT), implement treatment interventions, collect data related to the intervention and progress the treatment plan established by the PT in order to meet the goals of the patient/client.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program is designed to be completed in four (4) semesters on a full-time basis when the student begins the technical portion of the program. The degree program consists of open enrollment courses (general education and division specific) and program specific courses with limited enrollment. The open enrollment courses may be taken prior to entry into the limited enrollment courses. The PTA program adheres to a competitive selection process for entry to the limited enrollment courses. To qualify for entry to limited enrollment courses, please see the Applicant Information packet located on the webpage. Students must complete all of the prerequisites and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 for entry into the limited enrollment courses. A grade of C or higher is required in all program courses, and the PTA courses must be taken in sequence.

Prerequisites: Approval of Department PTA 1106 and ALH 1101 and BIO 1121 and HIM 1101 and PHY 1106

Program Outcomes

  • Participate in professional development based on self-assessment, performance appraisals and demonstration of behaviors reflecting conduct outlined in the Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct of the APTA.
  • Provide safe, competent interventions and patient education, based on the plan of care established by the PT to minimize risk to the patient, self and others and ensure appropriate patient outcomes. (PSYCHOMOTOR/ COGNITIVE)
  • Demonstrate appropriate, effective written, oral and non-verbal communication, which reflects sensitivity and awareness to individual and cultural differences in all aspects of physical therapy services. (AFFECTIVE)
  • Provide quality, efficient and cost effective physical therapy services utilizing human and material resources, computer technology and current knowledge of reimbursement and regulatory requirements and state practice acts. (PSYCHOMOTOR AND AFFECTIVE)
  • Perform data collection techniques as outlined in the plan of care, reported through accurate, timely and legible documentation. (PSYCHOMOTOR)
  • Demonstrate clinical problem-solving skills in order to adjust the plan of care established by the PT, provide supervision of the physical therapy aide and work effectively on an interdisciplinary team.(COGNITIVE)(PSYCHOMOTOR/ COGNITIVE)
