There is a commonly used metaphor that fish don’t know they are swimming in water – illustrating, as one writer put it, “that the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about”. In a nation where only one of 46 presidents has been a person of color, and where none have been women, why is it so difficult to recognize, let alone talk about, the obvious reality of everyday white male supremacy culture? How might we be swimming in waters that we don’t realize disadvantage those not in the dominant group? How does this pose a greater threat to equity than overt, easily identifiable racism? And why is there so much resistance to even talking about it? This session is designed to promote active discussion among participants of these and other issues surrounding white male supremacy culture.
