Sinclair College President Appointed to AACC Advisory Board

Sinclair President Steven Johnson was recently appointed to an Advisory Board that will support the efforts of the Expanding Community College Apprenticeships (ECCA) Initiative. The Initiative is designed by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) with funding from the U.S. Department of Labor. The ECCA project will be conducted over three years and will train 16,000 apprentices.

“Apprenticeship programs are critical to moving our local and regional economies forward,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, President of Sinclair Community College. “Employers are talking about a lack of skilled workers and apprenticeship programs are vital to many of our nation’s economic development efforts. I look forward to working with leaders across the country to create more student apprenticeship programs that will lead to well-paying jobs and build the pipeline of workers that employers need.”

Dr. Johnson tenure as Sinclair’s president began in 2003, and he is Ohio’s longest-serving president of a public university or college.  He serves as the chair of the 23-college president’s council of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.  He is the past chair of the national board of the League for Innovation in the Community College.  As the president of Ohio’s lead college for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported Completion by Design initiative, Johnson has worked to help improve state and national systems helping more students obtain more college education faster and for less money.

The American Association of Community Colleges is a national organization representing the nation’s over 1,200 community, junior and technical colleges. The colleges are the largest and fastest growing sector of public higher education, annually enrolling almost half of all U.S. undergraduates. For more, see www.aacc.nche.edu .
