Sinclair Community College Preparing Students for STEM Courses and Careers During Special Summer Program

Sinclair Community College is preparing students for degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through the 2022 LSAMP Summer Bridge Institute.

Sinclair Community College is one of 10 higher education institutions participating in the Ohio Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program. The purpose of this alliance is to significantly increase underrepresented minority student recruitment, retention, persistence, and attainment of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees. Louis Stokes was an attorney, civil rights pioneer, and the first African American congressman elected in the state of Ohio.  He served 15 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Sinclair’s 2022 LSAMP Summer Bridge Institute gives students a hands-on preview for a variety of STEM degree programs.  Throughout the week, students are meeting Sinclair’s STEM faculty, touring classrooms and labs, developing study skills to be successful, receiving specialized instruction for college-level courses, and learning time and stress management skills.  The students are also participating in immersive, hands-on activities in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics.

“The LSAMP Summer Bridge Institute aligns with Sinclair’s mission to find the need and endeavor to meet it by preparing students for college STEM courses and guiding them on their journey to academic and career success,” said Marita Abram, LSAMP Principal Investigator, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences – Sinclair Community College.

Launched in 2013, Sinclair’s LSAMP Summer Bridge Institute is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

The students will be recognized on Friday, July 15, 2022, during the LSAMP Summer Bridge Completion Awards Ceremony beginning at 12:45 p.m. in the Tartan Terrace, Building 13, Room 406. Building 13 is located at Fifth and Perry Streets in downtown Dayton. Members of the media are invited to attend the ceremony.
