Pride (7-4) Holds on at North Carolina

Chapel Hill, NC – Sinclair Men's basketball finished off a three day road trip with an 87-85 win over the University of North Carolina JV (6-3) Tar Heels played in the Dean Smith Center

After a long bus ride down to Chapel Hill on Thursday, Sinclair was treated with an early Holiday gift. Friday the Pride drove the 8 miles from Chapel Hill to Durham to practice at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University. Thanks to Mike Ryan the Director of Intercollegiate Athletic Facilities at Duke, Sinclair was granted a two hour time slot at Cameron for practice which turned into a lot of photo ops with some practice mixed in. Home of the Cameron Crazies and Coach K Court, Cameron Indoor Stadium is considered one of the top college basketball venues in the nation.

Saturday Sinclair squared off against the Tar Heels JV squad for the third time during the Coach Price era. Sinclair won the first game between the two teams and UNC won the last meeting but this match up would turn out to be the closest and most exciting of the three.

Sinclair opened the game scoring the first basket but quickly fell behind as the Pride struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The 9 point margin the Tar Heels held in the first half was the largest lead of the game by either team. By the end of the 1st half, Sinclair had erased the Tar Heels lead with solid defense and easy transition baskets. Heading into intermission, the hot shooting Pride posted a 45-38 halftime lead by shooting 47.5% from the field and 44.4% from the 3pt arc.

The second half started with another Tar Heel run as they quickly erased the Prides 7 point halftime lead to take their own 7 point lead with about 13 minutes remaining. After exchanging baskets, Sinclair mounted their final comeback and took a 76-75 lead with about 7 minutes to go. The game stayed in the balance until the 2 minute mark when Trent Maddox (6/4 SO/Gallatin Co H.S. KY) knocked down a big three point shot to give the Pride a 6 point spread. The Tar Heels made a couple of clutch baskets to pull within 2 points in the final seconds and had the ball on a sideline out of bounds with 3.1 seconds only to have their 3 point shot attempt fall short.

Sinclair was lead by a trio of freshman in scoring; Gavin Schumann (6-1/Cincinnati – Roger Bacon H.S.) 26 points and 6 steals, Charlie Byers (5-10/Cincinnati – Moeller H.S.) 24 points and 6 assist, JaBriel Coaston (6-5/Cincinnati Roger Bacon H.S.) 12 points and 7 rebounds.
"This was a dream come true. We had the opportunity to play on two of the greatest courts in college basketball and we did it in a 24 hour time frame. And the icing on the cake came with the win at UNC." Said Freshman Guard Aaron Valerio (6-0/Kettering – Fairmont H.S.)

Sinclair returns to action Wednesday night as the Pride take on the Quakers of Wilmington College in Wilmington, OH. Game time is set for 6pm and will be played at Wilmington College
