Borrowing Items

Sinclair Students/Faculty/Staff

Students, faculty, and staff will need to present a Tartan Card or valid state photo ID or driver’s license to borrow materials from the Sinclair Library. You can get your own Tartan Card by coming to the office of Registration and Student Records in the Welcome Center, Building 10, First Floor when you are registered for classes.

General Public/Alumni

Any person may use the books, magazines, and reference services available while in the Sinclair Library. Our policy on library privileges for alumni has changed. We no longer give graduating students borrowing privileges for a year. Also, we no longer offer lifetime borrowing privileges through the Alumni Association. Alumni who paid for Lifetime membership are grandfathered in, but no new alumni will be added.

However, as Ohio residents, you have some options that will give you nearly the same access to library resources that current students have.

  • For borrowing books and other library items, you can get a State Library of Ohio or Greene County Public Library (GCPL) card. This will give you borrowing privileges to both libraries as well as SearchOhio, a consortium of public libraries, and OhioLINK, the statewide consortium of academic libraries. If you can’t find what you need, you can search for it in the SearchOhio and OhioLINK catalogs and request items to be held for you at any OhioLINK library or GCPL branch. You can sign up for a State Library card at https://library.ohio.gov/using-the-library/get-a-library-card/ or a GCPL card at https://library.gcpl.lib.oh.us/selfreg. Once you  have your card, bring it with you to Sinclair and we will check out our materials to you as a visitor.
  • For article databases, you have access to the Ohio Web Library which offers some of the same resources that Sinclair has, including Academic Search Premier. To use the databases, you’ll need to enter your zip code. The Ohio Web Library is at http://ohioweblibrary.org.  Dayton Metro, Greene County, and other public libraries subscribe to additional databases, so you might want to check what your public library has.

You are also welcome to come to the Sinclair Library and use a guest computer. This would give you access to all the library’s subscription databases for 2 hours per day.

OhioLINK

Students, faculty, and staff from OhioLINK institutions must have a valid college ID and a photo ID in order to borrow materials from the Sinclair Library.

Renewing Library Materials

Items eligible for renewal will renew automatically three days before the item is due. Notices of auto-renewals will be sent as courtesy emails to your Sinclair email. Items can be manually renewed, but it must be on or before their due date. This can be done in person at the Library Service Desk, or by using the My Library Account/Renew option on the Library’s website.

Sinclair Library and OhioLINK materials cannot be renewed if the item has been requested by another patron.  Reminder notices are sent to your Sinclair email account as a reminder to patrons to renew items before they are due. All fines incurred before renewal still apply.

Account information including renewals, materials checked out, requested materials and fines owed are available through your My Library Account. Contact the Library if you have any questions.

Overdue Materials
  • All library borrowing privileges will be suspended immediately if the patron has overdue materials.
  • Fines for materials borrowed through OhioLINK are $0.50 per day per item for up to 30 days. This includes days that the Library is not open, such as Sundays. Items not returned after 30 days will be billed $115 per item. Once materials are returned, this will be reduced to a $15 per item fine.
  • Once a patron has been billed for materials not returned, the Library will put a hold on the patron’s record. This will prevent the patron from registering for new courses, applying for graduation, and obtaining transcripts.
  • With the exception of Reserve materials, no fines are charged on Sinclair materials once the materials are returned.
  • If you fail to return, lose or damage Sinclair Library materials, you must pay the full replacement or repair cost for the item, plus a five-dollar service charge. Example: if the replacement cost for an item is thirty dollars, you will be charged thirty-five dollars. You must obtain a statement at the Sinclair Library Service Desk and pay the appropriate charges in the Bursar's Office (Building 10, Room 016, 937-512-2606) OR you can pay online. Help on how to do this can be found on this webpage.

For more information, contact the Library Service Desk at the Sinclair Library: Phone: 937-512-3007 or by email at: circulation@sinclair.edu
