Article discussion: the Violent Defense of White Male Supremacy

Date: Friday, February 19, 2021
Time: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Campus: Other
Location: Zoom - Register for Details

2020 has seen a resurgence of racist-fueled violence.  But what may seem to some like a new phenomenon in our time is really a centuries old, oft-repeated pattern that has emerged time and again throughout America’s history whenever the dominance of the white male majority has felt threatened.  White supremacy was born in violence, and has always sought to maintain itself through violence.  Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s Atlantic article “The Violent Defense of White Male Supremacy” explores how this phenomenon is playing out in our time in response to an anti-racism movement that has become the “largest movement of any kind in American history”, and provides a framework for understanding the tension and unrest we see around us today in the context of historical white supremacy in America.  Please join us for a discussion of how the events of today are related to the violence that white supremacy has always employed to push back against efforts to make America more just, inclusive, and equitable.
