Join us for a discussion and screening of the 2022 documentary, directed by David Mesfin. Looking at the central yet chronically overlooked role Black people have always had in surfing and aquatic culture, this documentary follows the history of surfing from Africa to the U.S, including the practice of using enslaved people to dive for treasure, and the forcible removal of thriving Black communities from America's shores. Interweaving historical accounts with modern-day testimonials, the film dismantles the racial barriers of conventional surf culture, explores the overlooked history of Black surfing's legacy, and celebrates its ongoing resurgence -- motivating the next generation of Black surfers.
