Sinclair Community College and Congressman Mike Turner Announce Federal Funding for Health Sciences Programs

Sinclair Community College welcomed Congressman Mike Turner to the Dayton campus on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to announce $2 million in federal funds for health science programs. These funds will be used to purchase cutting-edge medical equipment, increase capacity in Sinclair’s Health Sciences programs, introduce new histotechnology certificate programs, and renovate several labs inside the Ned J. Sifferlen Health Sciences Center at the Dayton campus.

“It is my honor to be here today at Sinclair, one of the greatest places for people to get an education. This is a university dedicated not only to investing in education but also in people’s futures and their lives,” said Congressman Mike Turner. “One of the things that I think is so extraordinary is when you walk through Sinclair, every educational program they have is of the utmost quality. The leadership here at the school makes certain that students are appropriately trained, and they have an unbelievable, highly dedicated faculty. I have worked with Sinclair on a number of funding projects, and I want to congratulate them on the fact that they helped me be successful. They don’t just apply for federal funds and get awarded. We had to compete for these funds, and Sinclair is highly competitive nationally, both in their programs and the funding they seek. I am very proud to be a partner and to have worked with Sinclair to secure this funding.”

This funding will allow Sinclair Community College to grow the pipeline of qualified health care professionals, expand capacity in high-demand areas, offer new certificate programs, and purchase new state-of-the-art equipment mirroring the technology in real-world health care settings.”

“When you think about making this type of investment, it’s an investment and a possibility to attract a talented workforce or caring individuals that show up competent, and that’s valuable,” said Mike Gentry, CEO of Kettering Health. “It’s really important for us, the future economic machine learning, and all the things that are changing as a partnership like this. We’re an educational institution that works with us to enhance the tech of schools to figure out what needs to be reformed in the future.”

In the past five years, more than 8,500 Health Sciences students have graduated from Sinclair. In addition, Sinclair has agreements with over 600 employers in the region to provide clinical experiences to students.

The funding will be targeted to the following Sinclair Health Sciences programs:

• Emergency Medical Services: renovations will allow the program to co-locate near the Paramedic program, expand enrollment in the in-demand EMT program, and create efficiencies with shared equipment between the Paramedic and EMT programs.
• Medical Lab Technology: renovations will allow the department to begin offering the new histotechnology certificate program.
• Veterinary Technology: renovation will provide the program with a lead-lined room for students to perform x-ray simulation. A requested mobile x-ray unit will be used in Sinclair’s mobile veterinary clinic, increasing service options for underserved pet owners within the community.
