Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) care for the sick and injured in emergency medical settings and transport patients to medical facilities. This area of study might be for you if like you like to help people in need and have good judgment. The EMT is the first step in gaining a more complete understanding of emergency medicine and becoming a Paramedic.

What is the program about?

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are essential members of the health care team who provide time sensitive care to patients. These individuals take the emergency department to people's homes, to highways and to other remote locations. EMTs bring life-saving equipment and knowledge to bear in an effort to reduce patient’s suffering and to save lives. Students will use lecture, laboratory and real world exposure to emergencies to learn the skills needed to care for the sick and injured in the out-of-hospital environment. The program is offered to provide students with variability and flexibility in scheduling. For more information, contact the EMS department at 937-512-5338 for an entrance application packet. Note: For students under age 18 there may be restrictions on participating in certain Health Sciences programs. Any student under age 18 must contact the program director/department chair to discuss whether he or she may enroll.

Career Opportunities

Within the greater Miami Valley area, EMS professionals are hired by fire departments, private EMS and hospitals. These agencies typically hire entry personnel based on the candidates state licensures/certifications – not whether the candidate is degreed. When local departments are hiring full-time employees, many of them are looking for paramedic/firefighters.

Credentials

The EMT program at Sinclair Community College complies with all requirements as outlined by the Ohio Division of Emergency Medical Services (state accrediting body). In accordance, the department teaches to National EMS Educational Standards published in 2009. Successful students will be eligible to sit for state certification testing and eventually be eligible to become licensed / certified as an EMT.

Additional Information

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - This program consists of 2
courses, taken concurrently, EMS 1150 and 1155. This certification is an
entry level position for functioning on an ambulance. Requires 7 credit
hours and successful completion of state certification examination.

• Must be 18 or older and provide proof of age (i.e. driver's license, military id, etc.)


• Must complete the EMS Interest form


• Must test out of or take and pass DEV 0015 or have taken and passed a college level English course
• Must provide proof of health insurance

Upon successful completion you are eligible to sit for the National
Registry exam. This test is the vehicle used by the state to determine
competency. Individuals wishing to practice as an EMS provider within
the state of Ohio will then need to apply for state licensure. Once
granted state licensure individuals will be able to gain employment.
