What is the program about?
This program leads to an Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology and provides the knowledge and skills required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for certification as an Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT). To become an AMT, two ratings are required, the Airframe (A) and the Powerplant (P); this is commonly referred to as an "A&P Certificate". Students will complete the requirements for Sinclair's General, Airframe and Powerplant Aviation Maintenance certificates and will refine the knowledge and skills they have learned with extensive hands-on training in the aviation maintenance lab. Students, having completed this course work, will be eligible to test for the FAA A&P Certificate. The graduate can either continue towards a bachelor's degree in aviation (or related field) or can begin a career as an AMT. Sinclair is an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) under Part 147.
Program Outcomes

- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the composition of materials, forming of metallic and non-metallic structures used in aircraft construction, repair, materials and processes, corrosion control, inspection methods of those materials and proper rigging.
- Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and update instruments. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the materials, parts and processes of the reciprocating engine in developing power, components of the reciprocating engines and their preventive maintenance, maintenance and airworthiness inspections.
- Demonstrate an understanding of federal and international regulations governing aircraft maintenance and documentation requirements as they relate to each area of expertise, weight and balance requirements, and ground operations and servicing of the aircraft
- Demonstrate the required operation before overhaul, teardown, buildup, overhaul, inspection, installation of turbine engine or components and documentation.
- Operation, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and updating of instruments, communications, navigation, and automatic dependent broadcast systems and in-flight passenger systems.
- Inspect and overhaul propeller and component systems for reciprocating engines.
- Operate, inspect, repair and service critical safety and utility systems of the aircraft such as fuel and atmospheric systems.
- Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, safety systems, electrical systems, installation of turbine engines, components and documentation.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge and operation of aircraft electrical power production and distribution systems; basic knowledge of wiring diagrams, load analysis/math, repair and troubleshooting.
Career Opportunities
The Aviation industry is experiencing a pressing shortage of aviation mechanics. In its most recent pilot and technician outlook report, issued in 2020, Boeing estimated that 739,000 new technicians would be needed worldwide during the next 20 years, much of it due to the large number of recent and upcoming retirements in the field....That includes 192,000 new technicians needed in North America.
Credentials
The FAA A&P certificate is the basic requirement for an aviation maintenance technician to maintain US registered aircraft in an airworthy condition. The A&P mechanic is vital for the safety of the flying public.
