Motivation for COIL:
I am primarily interested in using COIL as a teaching strategy so my students can broaden their experiences and skills while learning how to effectively communicate with an international audience. I see COIL as one way to help my American students—who may never physically leave the United States—understand the interrelatedness of all people. I also hope that through academic collaboration they may challenge assumptions they hold about themselves and students in other countries. As an undergraduate student, I studied for a semester at the University of Salamanca in Spain and as a professor, I have led two groups of students on short-term study abroad to Durban, South Africa; however, as much as I value study abroad experiences, I believe effective use of COIL in my courses would have benefits for larger numbers of students. Last, I consider myself a life-long learner, and I look forward to learning from and collaborating with a professional from another country.
