ALH 1122 Pharmacy Technician I

This course is the first of two core courses in the Pharmacy Technician Program and will help prepare students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam. Course content includes the duties and responsibilities of the pharmacy technician, as well as the mathematical components and the pharmacology foundation necessary to become a successful pharmacy technician. Scope of pharmacy practice including handling of infectious and hazardous waste, interpersonal skills and beginning pharmacology and dose calculations.

Prereqs: MAT 0100 or MAT 0600 OR MAT 1110 OR MAT 1130 OR MAT 1445  MAT 0100 or MAT 1110 or MAT 1130 or MAT 1445 may be taken concurrently with ALH 1122 

Outcomes

  • Compute drug formulations and dose conversion.
  • Describe the major types of drug distribution within healthcare facilities, including advantages and disadvantages of unit dose distribution.
  • Explain legal aspects of drug dispensing, including those pertaining to drugs categorized in each of the DEA drug schedules.
  • Demonstrate the use of effective communications skills in pharmacy practice.
  • Utilize medical terminology as it pertains to pharmacy practice.
  • Interpret medication orders and prescriptions, including the explanation of the factors that cause medication errors in regards to pharmacy practice.
  • State the principle sites at which pharmacies are located, including the general functions of pharmacists and technicians.
  • Explain the proper manner in which to handle infectious and hazardous materials in the pharmacy.
  • Utilize ratio and proportion in pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Describe drug classification, indications and side effects of given drugs.
  • Explain the different computer systems used in pharmacy practice.
