AVT 3300 Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Aviation

Introduction to the main foundational concepts and techniques used in Artificial Intelligence (AI); including decision making, planning, machine learning, and perception. Includes a range of real-world applications in which AI is currently used in aeronautical and aerospace systems.

Division: Science, Mathematics and Engineering
Department: Aviation Technology
Repeatable Credit: No
Offered Online: No

Prereqs: MAT 1470 AND MAT 1570

Outcomes

  • Investigate questions about AI systems such as: how to represent knowledge, how to effectively generate appropriate sequences of actions and how to search among alternatives to find optimal or near-optimal solutions in aviation. Explore how to deal with uncertainty in the world and how to learn from experience. Cover the aggregation of conflicting preferences and computational theory.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of current ethical issues related to the use AI systems in society.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how probability and AI are closely interrelated, and how automated agents make decisions. Acquire a strong appreciation of the big-picture aspects of developing fully autonomous intelligent agents in aviation.
  • Use modern techniques for computers to represent task-relevant information and make intelligent (i.e., satisficing or optimal) decisions towards the achievement of goals in aviation. Employ search and problem-solving methods applicable throughout Aviation Automation systems.
