Scientific principles of dental hygiene practice with emphasis on preventive dental health concepts, pedodontic care, promotion of dental health, care planning, patient referral and dental specialties, periodontal instrumentation, care of the removable prosthesis and oral health education. - Describe the history and benefits of fluoridation, the mechanism of action, metabolism, toxicity of fluoride, and the selection criteria for professional application of topical fluoride.
- Describe the management techniques used on the pediatric patient.
- Demonstrate the use of effective listening behaviors.
- Describe the various dental specialties and the appropriate time for referral to each.
- Describe the appropriate care of a patient's removable prosthesis and the home care instructions provided.
- Identify and describe the various dental hygiene instruments, the rationale for their use and the procedure for sharpening.
- Compare and contrast dental hygiene care plans for the preventative oral prophylaxis, periodontal debridement, and periodontal maintenance patient.
- Describe the procedures for extrinsic stain and plaque removal.
