HUM 1132 Holocaust & Genocide

Explores the concept of genocide primarily through the prism of the 20th Century Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany. The course addresses the background, progress and historical context of the Nazi holocaust, as well as other genocides, and the philosophy and psychology of "racial purity."

Outcomes

  • Evaluate, with supporting evidence, the effectiveness of eye-witness accounts in conveying historical events by examining individual memoirs.
  • Evaluate and explain, with supporting primary evidence, the role of political, economic, intellectual, and philosophical realities in creating the Nazi Holocaust.
  • Explain, with supporting primary evidence, the steps by which the rights and privileges of targeted groups were gradually restricted in Nazi Germany, as well as the ways in which such groups were eventually to be exterminated.
